Pileated Woodpecker

Dryocopus pileatus

Description:

Largest woodpecker in most of the U.S. with a wingspan up to 30 inches. The name comes from their red cap of feathers. Females (like this one) lack an extra red patch that males have below the eye.

Habitat:

Forests with tall trees. They forage mainly for ants by excavating large holes in the trunks of trees, which are then frequently visited by other bird species.
