Guaria turrialba , Cattleya

Cattleya dowiana

Description:

The pictures were made at home but Ive put on the map one of two locations where Ive seen it growing on the wild, in very small populations

Habitat:

Some specimens grows on Costa Rica's Atlantic low lands (talamanca, guapiles, san carlos, turrialba) between 80 and 1200 meters, thought it had been found very near from central valley (Cachi and Santiago), in Cartago. Those places are rain moderated (around 900 / 1200 mm a year) with a temperature going from 15 to 30 celsius degrees, and a humidity around 80% as average.

Notes:

Cattleya dowiana is one of the most beautiful of the cattleya species and has been a treasure for collectors since its discovery in 1850. It is the only cattleya species of the Cattleya labiata group that has yellow sepals and petals, and with its dark crimson-purple lip veined with gold, it is magnificent. Because of its beautiful color, C. dowiana has had a long history of use .n breeding, and it has been used more than any other Cattleya species in creating new Cattleya hybrids.

Saludos!

Your pics remind me of my trip to Costa Rica. I was in Limon and Manzanillo. Indeed there are very unique plants and animals around. Nice shots :-)
