Groundhog

Marmota monax

Description:

This large rodent is covered in brown and gray hair and weighs up to nine pounds in most environments, but size is dependent upon nutrition and in some places much larger specimens have been reported. Groundhogs are burrowing animals and are well equipped with short, strong claws.

Habitat:

Open fields, edge of forests

Notes:

Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks.
