Killdeer (with grasshopper)

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

The two killdeers pictured are two different individuals. They were relatively close and I assume that they were mates. When I first found them, it looked like one was sitting on something (possibly a nest), but I'm not positive. The individual in the first picture had just caught a grasshopper.

Habitat:

Found in the middle of a lot that has roads on two sides. One is a four-lane highway and the corner of the lot is at a stoplight. Not very surprising though; I've always found these birds in urban habitat - I've found two pairs in the past making nests in parking lots (see one of my previous spottings). I am scared that if they do nest here and hatch out chicks that the chicks could wander onto a road.

Notes:

I know that I have spottings of killdeers before. The first one was just a lone killdeer. The second I posted because it had a nest. My excuse to post this one is that the individual in the first picture is eating. They're all slightly different. ;)
