Taurotragus oryx
The common eland (mbunga in Swahili) is the largest antelope on the African continent, and can weigh up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). These shy animals have striking spiraled horns, and a smooth coat with white vertical stripes for the bulls. Their predators include lion, leopard, and, due to their size and tasty meat, man.
Savanna and plains. Distribution: East and Southern Africa. Spotted here in the Siana Conservancy next to Masai Mara. To find out more about this conservancy see http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/729...
The elands are most active in the morning and late afternoon, and this herd was spotted close to sunset. While in the area I saw elands daily but never got close. Elands live in large mixed groups of 25-70 individuals, thus even in the distanced they don’t go unnoticed. These animals are docile and have been domesticated in parts of South Africa.
