I have found many from all over the area here. I have about 30 on my property which I transplanted to one place. All of the mature plants reproduce each year.
I understand they reproduce easily (seeds) so I hope to get a baby. My sweet orchid is now over two years old and has bloomed. If we face another hurricane I will dig it up and pot it to keep it safe.
I was just up on Sanibel Island in SW Florida where I lived for ten years. i saw a bunch of them there for the first time only because I had seen them here! LOL
Found one of these terrestrial small orchids growing in my garden behind some hedges in light shade about two years ago. It can be found in Florida from mid state and further south.
It seems its origins are in Africa and it is believed maybe it was first carried west by birds (its seeds), wind or water.
Boy Craig I wish I knew. There are so many ground dwelling creatures here. Could be anything. As they are basically burried amongst a really large stand of heliconia psittacorum....butterflies, moths, various species of ants, birds, skunks, could be anything
Your property seems like a great place to be :) Love these - have you ever noticed what pollinates them?
Oh right, I remember. Sorry, sometimes it's hard to keep track of all my comments and interactions but I remember that for sure. Maybe you could put that in your notes so we know exactly where the spottings are from. This is a tiny beauty too!
Oops, that I had various orchids growing here on my property and I would get them uploaded for you to see
Sorry, IgCostaNut, can you remind me what you were telling me about it. I thought Jonathan would have an idea for ID.
