Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma maculatum

Description:

The one I found is 7 inches long and black-greenish with yellow spots. They can grow up to 9 inches long and live for 20 years.

Habitat:

They are prevalent in mature deciduous forests from eastern Canada throughout the eastern and midwestern United States. But these secretive salamanders spend almost their entire lives hidden under rocks or logs or in the burrows of other forest animals.

Notes:

I found this salamander in the water dish outside the door this morning.
