unknown moth (wasp mimic)
Description:
This moth was quite small - maybe two cm long. It had feathery antennae and only stayed still for a few seconds before moving on.
Habitat:
High desert riverbed.

I too think this is a Sesiid moth. While the wings don't seem clear in this photo, they will when unfolded. The visible colored edge is just the front part of the forewing.
I have a Sesiid from UT that I'm trying to ID too, so if I stumble across a possible ID for this one I'll let you know.

Thanks Juan! A couple of months ago I saw a clearwing moth (http://textless.tumblr.com/post/86727759...) that definitely matched the pictures of Sesiidae I've found (http://bugguide.net/node/view/66718). I didn't get a great view of this moth's wings, but they didn't look clear like that. And its antennae were very bushy. Could it still be Sesiidae?
