Large spider, possibly an orb-weaver, with a large web across the hiking trail. Unfortunately I only got a photo of the ventral (under) side.
Hiking trail near bald cypress swamp, southern Illinois.

HI! Happy New Year. You must come and join us at FB. We have a spider group. All people here are invited. I am Carol Snow Milne there. I love socializing with all my friends here at Project Noah. :)
this looks similar to my spider. Mine is called a Hentz's Orb Weaver, Neoscona crucifera.
I love this. I get mostly banded or yellow and black argiope and marbled ones and different color Shamrocks. I haven't seen this cool one yet. Thanks for identifying my praying mantis (Chinese). :)
I'm pretty sure this is a spotted orbweaver in the genus Neoscona, though from just the ventral side it's hard to tell if it is Neoscona crucifera (http://bugguide.net/node/view/163698) or N. domiciliorum (http://bugguide.net/node/view/452066). This may call for a submission to bugguide to see if they can figure it out. Thanks Edward for your encouragement that I was on the right track.
definately an Orb Weaver, now to find out the exact species ......
