Beaver

Castor canadensis

Description:

Appeared to be young, had very odd fur that was coarse to the touch. He (we assumed it was male :) was munching on this vegetation in the swamp and made bazaar cooing and groaning/grunting noises.

Habitat:

Found him at Lake Bistineau National Park

Notes:

He actually was unphased by me watching him. He ate stems of these plants from our hands. You cannot tell from the photograph but he actually did have a beaver tail confirming that he was not a "nuetra-rat"

Great Spotting! And yes this is definitely a beaver. Seems a little young gauging by his size, and the cooing/grunting noises you described. I am also guessing that he's quite use to human contact, as typically beavers are very shy and reject all human contact.
