That was my first thought until I saw where you saw them.
Thanks i have no idea of tropical gulls on the other side of the pond, apparently very rare if they reach the UK look a lot like our black headed gulls though!!
I think these are winter-plumage Bonaparte's Gulls, Larus philadelphia
