Woodchuck (Groundhog)

Marmota monax

Description:

Medium sized rodent with gray to brown fur, a dark muzzle and black guard hairs. Legs are short in relation to body size.

Habitat:

Usually open areas such as pastures, fields and woodland areas, but sometime found in urban areas.

Notes:

This individual is one of our wild "neighbors". I only recently sighted this young woodchuck as it was grazing on fallen leaves near a storage building.
