Ling Ping ( Thai)

Averrhoa bilimbi

Description:

This tree is in the garden and has pretty little clusters of red flowers followed by these fruits which are quite sour. They are used in someThai curries, as a vegetable with a dip and can also be preserved like a jam, so I've been told.

Well done Craig! It's an amazing tree, unfortunately no one is really interested in taking the fruits and as you can see this tree is a very prolific bearer. I have pics of the flowers somewhere so will pop them on here as well. It's got great medicinal properties.. I was stung by a Ray just off shore about 6 months ago and a Thai lady who lived opposite the beach quickly pounded some leaves and applied them to the sting like a poltice. Stung like hell when she first applied it. Keep meaning to ask her what it was. Now I have another reason to find out. I fancy making some chutney. Hate seeing fruits etc. wasted and rainy season is approaching fast so could be a good time to start looking for recipes.

That's quite a sight! Thanks Viv. I didn't know this tree but I did know its close Averrhoa carambola or Star fruit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Averrhoa_ca...

What's really hard to equate is that this is in the same family as that familar British woodland plant Wood Sorrel! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalis
