Carpenter ant with scale

Description:

There were small white balls with black spot on the nodes of dry grass and these ants were guarding them.

Habitat:

Grass nodes.

Notes:

These white rounded structures looked like fungi to me. But I can't be sure. Curious to know what these could be.

I think this may be some kind of scale. See this site, half way down the page http://www.horticolour.com/pestguide.htm... I have this kind of scale on a plant in my yard; I also have several other kinds of scale on other plants. They seem pretty specific to the plant, and they are "farmed" by ants who eat the "honeydew" (sugar-water excrement) that the scale make.
