Magnificent Sea Star

Luidia magnifica

Description:

Also known as Magnificent Starfish, Luidia's Magnificent Sea Star and Luidia's Magnificent Starfish. This sea star varies in color and usually has ten legs. They feed on molluscs, worms and detritus, and can grow to more than 50cm wide.

Habitat:

Found singly or in groups in shallow waters on coral and rocky reef shores, often buried during the day and out feeding nocturnally. Widespread across the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

It was buried in the rubble and sand, and when disturbed it sprung out and curled into a ball. Then it spread its arms and started to crawl away. A few of its arms appear to have been cut midway.
