we found similar fungi in a nature reserve ( Melbourne suburb) last month. The centres, which are perhaps the spore-filled sacs were unimaginably soft to touch. They were growing on very damp earth beneath pine trees (Pinus radiata)- thanks for the post and to ENReulbach Jr for identifying them.
