Male has a shiny green head, white collar and a dark brown front, female is mottled brown. Both sexes have a blue wing patch with white borders.

@ Greg, These pictures interest me because i have been observing a pond for the last week. First and foremost you were able to capture the lovely green of the mallard without loosing the shine. Secondly ,you also showed how they look for food. Both by dunking and also by immersing their neck in the water,
I wanted to confirm that mallards also dunk their heads like other geese.So now i can.
I have observed that cormorants and grebes and sea ducks are smooth swimmers and go under water for several minutes. One minute you see them and the next minute you do not.
Geese usually dunk.Mallards more often stick their necks in. I have not had a chance to observe coots or a kingfisher looking for food. Nor have i seen coots immerse into water at all.
