I suspect you have a leaf mantis, Pseudacanthops caelebs.
I think it may be variable in color.

I never saw a black one before. I wonder if it had eye-spots?

Cool! Similar ones in Asia have eyespots on their wings, visible when they open. They are in the genus 'Deroplatys' . Not sure if yours are in the same genus.
