Carolina wolf spider

Hogna carolinensis

Description:

The carapace is dark brown with gray hairs (lighter in males) and usually without distinct markings. The abdomen is brown with a somewhat darker median stripe. (information from BugGuide)

Habitat:

Country roadside

Notes:

I first thought this was a tarantula that was crossing the road. I'm glad I got out to inspect because I had never photographed this species before.

Thanks, Lisa. This was one of my favorite spottings of the year. I almost passed on it, thinking it was another common tarantula!
