Tobacco hornworm

Manduca sexta

Description:

This is a BIG caterpillar. 13cm long. Very docile, stays immobile when touched. A very nice creature.

Habitat:

A tomato plant, in my garden.

Notes:

Note the small "nails" in the third picture. They must be very strong to support this immense insect in the plant.

Araújo, boa idéia. Farei isso amanhã se ela ainda estiver lá. Veja que pelo número de listas dá para identificar a espécie correta, de acordo com a Wikipedia.

Hi Alex.

Wikipedia link added with nice information and correct ID. From there:
"M. sexta have a short life cycle, lasting about 30 to 50 days. "
