Potter Wasp's Nest

Eumenes sp.

Description:

This small mud chamber was about the size of my thumb nail. I don't think the wasp was done building it, as they often will have a narrow neck with an out-turned edge that is very much like a hand-thrown pot made by a human. Typically, once constructed, the female will lay an egg inside, then provision it with live caterpillars and other similar larva that it paralyzes and leaves as a living larder for its own progeny. Once satisfied there is enough food inside, the wasp will seal the pot and go on to build another.
