flower beetle

Ischiopsopha lucivorax

Description:

Ischiopsopha are beetles from the subfamily Cetoniinae. The genus is spread throughout the whole Australian region. I. lucivorax seems the most likely candidate for the ID.

Habitat:

Spotted in a large semi-urban yard & garden nest to a disturbed patch of remnant equatorial lowland forest.

Notes:

This amazing creature landed on my foot during a bit of wind today. What luck!

They are stunning blue wings that it is about to open/close. Cetoinids can launch very quickly as they slide their wings out in one rapid movement rather than opening elytra and then the wings in two steps as other beetles do. What a superb photo.

Thanks very much. The only statistic I could venture would be an estimated total length of 35mm (mouthparts to end of elytron)... I've added another photo

Thanks both! Yes that is the suitably elegant wingset ensemble showing from beneath the lacquered wing covers :-)
