Staff Sergeant

Athyma selenophora

Description:

almost 3" wingspan

Habitat:

small clearing in tropical rainforest

Notes:

My guide and I stopped for a break during our recent 4 day trek near the border with Myanmar. We rested at a small concrete hut in a little clearing that had about 5 species of butterflies flying around and a few huge spiders. At first the butterflies were hard to photograph but then they started landing on my head, my hands, my legs and my backpack and I was able to get this shot.

Thanks for the comments and Atul for the ID. What a strange common name for this butterfly. It's funny, wiki lists its range as in Myanmar but not China. Since I was only a few kilometers away from the Myanmar border, this butterfly must have flown over! Haha!
