Wood Stork

Mycteria americana

Description:

I came upon this stork as I walked over the rise towards the pond. I didn't want to disturb him, so these are the only picture I took before moving on. Wood stork pairs often mate for life & are the only storks breeding in North America. This stork is easily recognized within its range due to its large size, general white color, large bill, long legs, & bald black head.

Habitat:

Tropical and subtropical. Spotted in the coastal tropical south, pond-side.

Notes:

The wood stork is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the USA. http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Regula... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Wood_...

Cute wood stork. They're among my favorites. A strange, oddly-graceful bird.
