Fall Webworms (Caterpillars)

Hyphantria cunea

Description:

Webbed nests at the end of a limb (as opposed to near the branch union with the trunk) of a tree tend to belong to the Fall Webworm. These early instars are still feeding inside the tent at the end of a branch on a fire cherry (Prunus pensylvanica) tree.

Habitat:

The moth is native to North America, ranging from Canada to Mexico. (Accidentally introduced from North America to Yugoslavia in the 1940s, and has since spread throughout Europe; later introduced to northern China and North Korea.)

Notes:

Spotted near Holly Creek in the Cohutta Wilderness Area
