Run-Run

Hymenops perspicillata

Description:

Spectacled Tyrant 16 Cms. Suspicious, Strong and most short tail. Peach yellow lemon pointed. As is typical in terrestrial hunters, the Run-Run has long legs. In flight, the wings look broad and rounded. Macho Distinctive, black with mostly white outer primaries, which creates a white, striking, and diagnostic alar pattern. Very different female, brown above with back list, which often confuses the observer. Mostly silent voice. When the male is exhibited, Flies and returns to his innkeeper drawing a circle in the air of approx. 5-10 mts. Of diameter, emitting a rapid and sudden sound in the vertex of the flight.

Habitat:

Summer visitor common in the marshes of the Center and South of Chile. Use marshes, lakes or lagoons with reeds. It prefers the Juncos (Scirpus), but also the Totora (Typha), and marshes with muddy edges or adjacent fields where to feed. Terrestrial, it feeds mainly on the ground, but territorial males are conspicuous, posing on tall reeds or tall bushes. 0-1000 mts. But many cross the Andes in migration.
