Description:

An extremely variable species across its range. Alpine plants are less than 8 in. tall; subalpine plants may reach 28 in. in height. Most forms are quite leafy. Flower heads, the rays ranging in color from white to purple, occur singly or in few-flowered clusters. The shape and hairiness of the foliage differs among subspecies and varieties.

Conditions Comments: To ensure success with such a variable species, it is especially important to select local plant material that originated in a habitat similar to your planting site.

This particular specimen was seen near Mowich Lake on Mount Rainier.
