Red Rim Butterfly

Biblis hyperia

Description:

Large, black butterfly with a bright red zig-zag pattern on the hind wings. This one was about 5 cm long. It was feeding on something in the gravel. It is the only species of the Genus Biblis, but has a large distribution from the southern US south to Argentina at elevations below 800 meters. Family Nymphalidae. Habitat:

Highly disturbed area, unfortunately with a lot of garbage, along the roadside, Km. 11.5, Highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico.
