I think that you were lucky enough to spot a male. The local male deer here are almost inconspicuous. All we spot is females.

What you see here is their thick winter fur. As you can see they realy need it. And yes they are very shy.

Yes they are, and there are so many of them around here that it's a lot of fun going out there. Nevertheless you still have to be careful and quiet.
