Barred Owl

Strix varia

Description:

About 2 feet in length, back was brown with white splotches, front was white with brown streaks.

Habitat:

East Texas Piney Woods.

Notes:

I hear these on occasion but have never seen one before. I was outside about 5 pm, on a misty gray day after several days of rain. It flew from a tree close to me, to one far away, and then stayed there watching me for about 3 minutes.
