Trillium erectum
Purple-red flowers have 3 petals that are above whorls of pointed triple leaves. The petals have a foul smell, which attracts carrion flies (and other insects) that act as pollinators.
Spotted growing in some leaf litter and a tiny bit of dirt that had collected on top of some large rocks in a mixed forest.

Congratulations Christine, your Red Trillium is our Spotting of the Day!
"Beautiful deep red flower but a pungent rotten smell! This Red Trillium is our Spotting of the Day! Native to eastern Canada and eastern United States, this perennial wildflower grows in cool, moist soils of woodland ecosystems. Trillium erectum blooms in the early to mid spring, and is pollinated by carrion flies attracted by its smell".
