Northern Groundcone

Boschniakia rossica

Description:

These are a little past their prime. Here is a nice, fresh one for comparison: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/697.... They were particularly abundant in this spot.

Habitat:

Shady spruce forest

Notes:

Northern Gorundcone is a parasitic plant that specializes on Alnus (alder), but can parasitize off of other trees and shrubs such as on Betula (birch), Salix (willow), Vaccinium (blueberry), Picea (spruce), and Chamaedaphne (leatherleaf shrub). I believe we have all of these in Kodiak.
