Jagged Ambush Bug

Phymata pennsylvanica

Description:

Small, robust, and colored in mostly yellow, with a little brown.

Habitat:

Field, on flowers.

Notes:

The ambush bugs are a subfamily (Phymatinae) of the assassin bugs. They can be found on plants with large flower heads, such as Goldenrod, Vernonia, and Boneset. They wait beneath the flowers for other insects to land, then grab them and devour them. Spotted at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
