Herring Gull

Larus argentatus

Description:

This herring gull was spotting amongst a flock of terns and other gulls. This was my first herring gull spotting and I was stunned by its size. It was a head larger than the other gulls! The red spot on the bill as well as the pink legs and feet were helpful in identification. (Note that only the gull in the center of the picture is a herring gull.)

Habitat:

Coastal beach.

Notes:

The Herring Gull is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the USA. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Herri...

Thanks! The size of this one was really what drew me over to the birds. I hadn't realized how many different types were together. More spottings to come!
