Shortfin Lionfish

Dendrochirus brachypterus

Description:

Also known as Shortfin Firefish, Shortfin Turkeyfish, Short-Finned Lionfish, Dwarf Lionfish, Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, Dwarf Fuzzy Lionfish and Shortspined Butterfly Cod. Their spines are highly venomous. They feed on small fish and crustaceans, and grow to a length of about 20cm.

Habitat:

Found singly or in small groups on coastal reefs and in lagoons, at depths of 3 to 80m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I've heard of lionfish attacking a diver once, but not again since, and he said that he had disturbed the fish excessively. Normally they just turn their backs on divers when they come too close.
