Gelada

Theropithecus gelada

Description:

I have just returned from the dramatic Simiens Mountains National Park in northern Ethiopia where I enjoyed the most incredible experiences with Geladas. These fierce looking primates actually only feed on grass and roots but posses the largest canines in proportion to body size of any mammal! These are used in rather fearsome displays especially when the males flip their gums back in a lip flare. However Geladas have never harmed humans and I was privileged to spent hours sitting right in amongst troops of over 500 Geladas, watching their incredibly entertaining and amusing behaviour. A truly amazing experience that cannot be more highly recommended.

Habitat:

Montane grasslands and cliffs

I highly recommend a book about baboons called, A Primate's Memoir, by Robert Sapolsky. He's a physiologist who spent 20 summers researching baboons, and he's an excellent writer.

There's a lovely book about baboons called A Primate's Memoir by Robert Sapolsky. It's a good read, and very interesting about baboon culture and life.

Wow Adam, great series you've captured! Congrats on Spotting of the Day!

"Don't be fooled be the menacing canines of the Gelada. They feed primarily on grass in the highlands of Ethiopia, and live in large social groups called harems."
