North American Beaver (chew)

Castor canadensis

Description:

A large tree, perhaps 18-20 inches in diameter, felled by a persistent beaver.

Habitat:

Chichaqua bottomlands natural area in central Iowa. A series of ox-box lakes and marshes surrounded by some woodland and restored prairie.

Notes:

I've seen bigger trees than this girdled by beavers, but haven't seen many this size that they've actually felled.
