Long-tailed sawfly larva

Family: Pergidae

Description:

Larvae with tapered body to rear; dark pointy tail; slightly translucent yellow; two false eyes just behind the head; amber coloured head. 30mm long.

Habitat:

Open dry forest mostly casurina and acacia. This specimen on eucalyptus - probably E. microcarpa

Notes:

Yet to ID precisely.

Sanjay - your suggestion has led me to some very interesting reading. I have not heard of the poison problem. Can you tell me what links you have for your suggestion?

martin - yes a loner. That's what made me curious as well as the yellow colour.
Sanjay - I'm not sure this is the same as your suggested id. (I won't eat any :)

the silver-leaved ironbark; produces larvae which can cause poisoning if eaten, because of their content of lophyrotomin.
