Oak young leaves; Hojas nuevas de roble melojo

Description:

Young leaves starting in a Pyrenean oak, that despite its name is very rare in the Pyrenees. It has been a very long winter and until middle may this trees have not produced leaves. They are deeply lobed and have short petioles. In contrast to the common oak (Q. robur) the leaves turn brown in autumn but remain on the tree all winter until new leaves emerge in the spring (marcescent leaves).

Habitat:

Open oak forest at 1200 meters above the sea level. Reserva de la Biosfera del Real Sitio de San Ildefonso-El Espinar.
