Morpho menelaus
Approximately 4 in (10cm) wingspan. Wings are bright iridescent blue when open. At rest, with wings closed, it is well camouflaged. Probably a male.
Usually see these flying through open areas along rivers and streams or in other clearings in the forest. Fairly common around the Explorama Lodges in the Napo River area.
This photo was taken many years ago - before GPS and digital cameras became common tools.

Beautiful, I see them all the time and I have not been able to take a picture with the wings open, they are so fast when flying but it is the only time I see their gorgeous iridescent blue color.
Very nice

Congratulations, this blue beauty was selected as Spotting of the Day!
"With a wingspan of nearly 6in (15cm), the Blue Morpho is the iridescent beauty of Central and South America, leaving brief flashes of blue as it travels above the forest canopy."

It´s a great shot, so there is lot of reaction :-) And that´s absolutely ok for this picture.
Thanks everyone! I never imagined that there would be this much activity within the first hour of our launch on Project Noah. How exciting! What a great community to be a part of.
