Cup Moth Cocoon -1

Doratifera sp

Description:

A small oval shaped hard-shelled cocoon about 20mm long seen wedged in crack between the flaking bark of a eucalyptus tree (? Victorian native). The cocoon looked as if it were part of the tree and had the same sooty grey colour. There were several such cocoons between bark flakes on this tree and some of them were open on the lower end as in pic # 3, as if cut by a knife.

Habitat:

Eucalyptus sp

Notes:

The tree had a rough bark but did not look like a eucalyptus tree seen in these parts. Also on this tree were remains of small elongated cocoons with thin casings ( seen in pics #1 and 2). This could be a cocoon of the Four-spotted cup moth. The only reference I could find with similar looking cocoons is http://arovingiwillgo.wordpress.com/2011...
