Viola tricolor hortensis
Pansies and violas come in many different colors and sizes but all can be identified by their beautiful flowers that look like faces. They are very hardy. In my Michigan garden they should be annuals but every year I have a few that come back in the Spring. They actually tolerate cold very well and are one of the first things I plant in the Spring.
Domestic gardens. They like sun. They will tolerate some shade. In fact in hot weather it's actually the other way around..they tolerate some sun and prefer shade in the heat of summer.
Slugs and snails will feed on them. One of my favorite plants. They work great in hanging baskets since you can move them into the shade earlier later in the season when it is hot to preserve their beauty more.
Thank you blaise----yes, I love the pansies. They come in such great colors! They work great in hanging baskets since they don't like it when it gets too hot. If they are in hanging baskets they can be moved into the shade during the hottest part of the day and they will bloom longer that way.
Sorry bout that. I meant to put nice pansy. I accidentally put a suggestion and forgot to put the comment I had planned. I also tired to remove the suggestion. I was still figuring out the site. Once again sorry bout that.
@Daacwen, they are actually the same--pansies and violas. Violas are just a smaller version of the pansy (at least in N. America's garden shops). You can see the smaller viola in photo #5.
