I've done some additional searching and can't find anything in addition, but am still thinking that it is a species of ground beetle.

This certainly resembles a tiger beetle, but I'm thinking that it is a ground beetle of some sort. The two are fairly easily confused. The jaws, while quite heavy, don't look quite right for a tiger beetle. The eyes don't seem to be quite prominent enough either.
