Brown Snake

Storeria dekayi

Description:

Tiny snake hunting at night on my back door threshold. Dusty Brown with darker markings along it's sides and a larger blotch on the top of it's head.

Habitat:

Grassy lawns and fields in agricultural area.

Notes:

We've sighted several of these little guys in our backyard and adjacent hay fields throughout the summer. It surprised me to find this one on my back door threshold leading out of my garage after dark. It jumped/slithered to the ground, a distance of about 18" and stayed still there in the dirt hiding under a small tomato plant.
