Hi Nigel. Are you sure this is S. varians? I see on whatsthatfish.com that the inside of Variable Thorny Oyster looks different from what I have here...

Wow what a cool invert Blogie! My first impression is that this is some kind of thorny oyster (Spondylus sp.) because of the shape of the edge of the shell at the mantle, but I'd have no idea what kind. It looks like some kind of monstrous mouth though haha!! Awesome spotting
