Bronze Copper Butterfly

Lycaena hyllus

Description:

Hind wings are nearly white, with a dark orange margin, with several rows of black spots. Upper wing is almost entirely orange or bronze, with a margin of greyish white and another row of black spots or a band. Please see site reference for descriptions of inner wings.

Habitat:

Spotted nectaring in the evening on common milkweed in a ditch-line between the road and my mowed yard.

Notes:

Proper name is debated apparently. See also: Lycaena thoe I originally identified this species as an American Copper, but a friend pointed out the difference.
