Sayornis nigricans semiatra
Black bird with white underside in the shape of an inverted "V". The head is conical shaped head. There is light edging on wings and tail.
Kit Carson park. This is a subspecies and the range is "Southwest United States to western Mexico, including Baja California. It is always found near water, and is often found at coastal cliffs, river/lake banks, or even park fountains. Habitats must also include a supply of mud for nest building, and the birds' specialized nesting requirements probably cause their somewhat irregular range." - Wikipedia
This bird is part of the family Tyrranidae which is the largest family of birds on Earth, with more than 400 species. This qualifies this bird to be in the NWF National Wildlife Week mission for Record Breakers.

Thank you Ava. This is the first time I was able to get some good pics showing detail.
Emma, I didn't know they were weak fliers. I'll watch the next one longer to see if it flies for distance rather than flies.
These belong to the flycatcher family.
Recently i saw a few with very well defined white bars. These do have a weak flight . Would not want to be around a bird of prey if I were a phoebe.
This is a lovely series Cindy. I can never get a clear picture of these guys, even though they hunt right in my garden!
Thank you Atul :) This bird is fun to watch when it swoops in the air catching flies. It didn't land on the ground at all!
lovely !
