Late Fall Oyster Mushroom

Panellus serotinus

Description:

As I was hiking, I was able to identify a Late Fall Oyster on a dead Late Fall Polypore laying on a hardwood log. A Late Fall Oyster’s caps are usually about 2-10 cm long, and is slippery when wet. A Late Fall Polypore is velvety, and its flesh is spongy, tough, and watery, but I doubt that when its dead. They both fruit on hardwood, but while a Late Fall Oyster is edible, a Late Fall Polypore is definitely not!

Habitat:

Fruits on Hardwoods.
