Plains zebra

Description:

These zebras are thick bodied with relatively short legs, bold white and black stripes and no two individuals look exactly alike. They also have black or dark muzzles. The natal coat of a foal is brown and white. Embryological evidence has shown that the zebra's background color is dark and the white is an addition. Their diet is primarily grass but they also eat herbs and shrubs. Plains zebra herds mix and migrate together along with other species such as wildebeests. Wildebeests and zebras generally coexist peacefully and will alert each other to predators. However, aggressive interactions occasionally occur.

Habitat:

The plains zebra is the most common and geographically widespread zebra species, ranging from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Angola and eastern South Africa. They are common in game reserves, but threatened by human activities such as hunting for their meat and hides, as well as competition with livestock and encroachment by farming on much of their habitat.
