Green Tree Ants

Oecophylla smaragdina

Description:

Green Tree Ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) build nests in trees within the rainforest, in the shape of balloons. Their gree abdomen is remarkably nutritious – it’s high in protein and vitamins.

Notes:

Aboriginal people ate the white larvae found inside the nests. It has a lemon taste. The ants and larvae were also pounded and mixed with water to produce a lime flavoured drink to relieve colds, headaches and sore throats
